Finding the blue domes on the Calhan Highway

St. Mary’s stands on the open prairie at the north edge of Calhan, Colorado, on the Calhan Highway at Ramah Road. Look for the blue domes; you will see them long before you see the sign.

Address

St. Mary’s Holy Dormition Orthodox Church

Getting here

From Colorado Springs

Take US-24 east through Falcon and Peyton to Calhan, about 35 miles from downtown. In Calhan, turn north onto the Calhan Highway. Head north out of town on the Calhan Highway; the church is at the corner of Ramah Road. Allow forty to forty-five minutes.

From Denver

Take I-25 south to Monument, then CO-105 and CO-83 (Parker Road) or E-470 to US-24 at Falcon, and continue east to Calhan. The drive is a little under two hours in good weather.

From the east

Follow US-24 west through Limon and Ramah to Calhan, then turn north onto the Calhan Highway.

Parking

There is plenty of gravel parking beside the church and the parish hall. Accessible parking is closest to the hall door.

Weather

This is the high prairie. In winter the Calhan Highway can drift shut and the wind is real. If a storm rolls in on a Saturday night, check the parish calendar or call before you drive out; a service is occasionally cancelled for safety.

St. Tikhon’s Chapel and the cemeteries

The original 1905 church site, now St. Tikhon’s Chapel, is a short drive north of the present church on the same road. The parish cemeteries are on either side of the highway nearby.
